Rooibos: Why You Should be Drinking More!

Rooibos tea vanilla

South African red bush tea “Rooibos” with the addition of vanilla creates a sweet, almost dessert-like cup of tea.

Rooibos tea was discovered over 300 years ago in the Cederberg region of South Africa. Red bush tea comes from the plant Aspalathus Linearis, which is generally hand harvested, cut, then left to ‘sweat’ (enzymatic oxidation during fermentation, which is where the brilliant red color comes from), and finally laid out to dry in the heat of the sun.

During World War II, Rooibos tea became popular substitute for tea, as regular tea  became increasingly difficult to import. Despite having a low profile around the globe, Rooibos is packed full of vitamins and minerals, with a ton of interesting benefits. It’s a wonderful alternative to actual tea, having absolutely no caffeine and more of a sweet, aromatic taste.

Rooibos contains minerals such as potassium, copper, magnesium, and manganese which are all essential for metabolic processes, as well as calcium, and fluoride which are necessary for healthy bones and teeth. Rooibos tea also contains iron, zinc, and sodium.

BENEFITS

There are many wonderful benefits to drinking Rooibos tea. Aside from this tea being deliciously tasty, Rooibos tea is naturally caffeine free which makes it easy to drink all day long. One study which took place in Tokyo’s Juntendo University School of Medicine back in 2009 showed that Rooibos tea may even prevent DNA damage and inflammation by its anti-oxidative activity and high antioxidant properties.

Better Skin

Studies have shown that Rooibos can help with skin disorders such as acne and eczema by drinking the tea often or applying it directly to the problem areas. Rooibos also contains a brilliant anti-aging enzyme called superoxide dismutase. The enzyme is necessary for producing healthy skin cells, and it fights wrinkles by neutralizing the free radicals that cause them. Rooibos is great for sensitive skin as well, as it is hypoallergenic and suitable for most skin and hair types.

Headaches & Insomnia

If you’re having trouble sleeping, try having a cup of Rooibos before bed. Rooibos is great for helping to calm you, as it’s caffeine free and keeps your body’s cortisol (anti-stress hormone) levels low. As Rooibos contains magnesium, drinking Rooibos can help to ease headaches by increasing your brain’s blood flow and may reduce the chances of future headaches and lower the severity of migraines.

Other benefits for Rooibos are:

✔ Keeping asthma under control

✔ Alleviate symptoms of allergies/hay fever

✔ Reduce risk of heart disease and cancer

✔ Improve blood pressure

Bonus – Rooibos is completely safe and healthy for children to drink!

Along with the no caffeine part of Rooibos, Red Bush tea is a popular choice for parents around the world as it is well known that Rooibos can help to sooth colic in babies. Rooibos can also help babies with troubled sleep, tummy problems (nausea, cramps, vomiting), and food allergies.
